Fruit arriving to quake affected residents in Japan

Taiwanese delegation donate fruit to quake affected residents

Taiwanese officials on Monday donated fruit to residents of north eastern Japan who suffered in last year's earthquake and tsunami. The first shipment of bananas is scheduled to arrive in the region today. 

A delegation led by Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu held a donation ceremony in Tokyo in which the mayor said she hopes the fruit will encourage the people who are rebuilding their lives in the damaged areas.

Chen sais that the people of southern Tawian felt for the people who suffered in the Earthquake and wanted to do something to help, particularly as Japan had offered similar assistance to Taiwan after natural disasters. 

Deliveries of the donated bananas, lychees, papayas and pineapples, worth around NT$1 million, begin this month and will continue through August, the Kaohsiung City government said.

A truck loaded with bananas departed after the news conference, and was expected to reach its destination the following morning, the delegation said.
