The Super Bowl is the most anticipated Sunday for many Americans, and now also for Michoacan avocado producers.
Avocados from Mexico (AFM) will be one of the trademarks debuting this year; an American marketing firm working as a link between importers of Mexican avocados in the U.S. and their producers and packers.
"We're really making history for the fresh category in the U.S., as we will be the first ever fresh produce brand to show advertising during the Super Bowl," said Álvaro Luque, President of AFM. "We are also making history for Mexico, because it is the first time that a product directly associated with Mexico will be advertised.
"It fills all avocado producers in Michoacan, who have worked hard for many years, with great pride. The commercial has been made to tell the world and our U.S. market that avocados originally, and proudly, come from Mexico," said Luque.
"Mexico is the world's only producer with four flowering seasons, which allows us to have product available throughout the year. Other producers reach their peak in summer, but winter is the season of parties and the Super Bowl, and then almost one hundred percent of the produce is Mexican," pointed out the president of AFM to explain the reason for advertising at the game.
"The other important point is that guacamole has become a staple food for American consumers when watching football; it is definitely the most popular naturally produced snack."
Over the last two weeks, 50,000 tonnes of avocados have been exported to the United States, according to the Avocado Growers Association of Mexico. From January to October last year, Mexico exported 481,000 tonnes of the fruit to this country.
